Sunday, 21 March 2004 - Mostly "with hat" - Yorkshire OUGS on Ilkley Moor

Cow and Calf rocks above Ilkley These were on the ground just inside the quarry at the top
A brief spell of sunshine, but the wind howled Ripple-marked rocks at the Cow and Calf
Okay students, which way up is this rock? "On top of t'world!"
Cross bedding on the Calf There were a lot of rainbows in the valley!
Feet for scale! My walking stick for scale
Prehistoric carvings These were carved by ice!  Glacial striations
Trying to work out what the carvings represented We followed much of the glacial moraine along the top
Yet more carvings - and a lot of water! Cut through the moraine
View across to Otley, the Chevin, and Wharfedale They kindly brought a sample up to show us
Nice view whilst eating lunch Laminae exposed in the bed of the beck
Exposure of Longridge Sandstone Looking at the variety of rocks brought down by the glacier
Another quarry - massively bedded sandstones At the end of our field trip - examining a section through the moraine

Many thanks to Karl for organising the trip, and to Neil Aitkenhead for being such an interesting and informative guide!   (Back to geology field trips page)
